Breast Cancer Awareness – Without Revealing the Color of Your Bra!
January 19, 2010 2 Comments
I was puzzled one night when I logged in my Facebook account. 7 out of 10 of my female friends had colors as their status message. Am I missing something here? I always seem to be late to the party (er, both figuratively and literally
)!
Alas, when I found out that this was actually some kind of viral campaign to get the word out about breast cancer, I opted not to join the club (or the party) at all. Not to be the party pooper here, but I have my own take on the cause. Not that I doubt anyone’s intentions – I’m pretty sure my friends had only good reasons for posting colors away on FB for days.
It’s just that I feel that there are other more concrete ways to show my support. This kind of “passive awareness”, in my opinion, somehow trivializes the true URGENCY of the plight of those afflicted with this disease. According to Imaginis, breast cancer is second only to lung cancer as the leading cause of death (among all types of cancer) in women today. Half a million women die from this ailment yearly. To make all these figures closer to home – the Philippines, according to the World Health Organization, has the highest incidence rate of breast cancer in the Southeast Asian region and ranks 9th in the world.
I know, it’s not even October yet (or October is way past already!), but hey, cancer won’t really tell you when it’s going to show up, right?
